Free Income Tax Calculator

This calculator estimates income tax, payroll contributions and take-home pay from a gross salary. It supports the United States, United Kingdom and Australia and applies each country’s own rules separately. Results show an estimate for a straightforward employee, not a tax return.

How to Calculate Income Tax

Most countries use progressive brackets: each rate applies only to income inside its band. Example, US single filer, 2026, taxable income $60,000: 10% of the first $12,400 is $1,240; 12% of the next $38,000 (to $50,400) is $4,560; 22% of the remaining $9,600 is $2,112. Total tax is $7,912, an effective rate of about 13.2% of that taxable income.

Income Tax Calculator for the USA

Federal income tax is charged on taxable income, which is your income minus pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction for your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately or Head of Household). Social Security (6.2%, capped at the annual wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% above filing-status thresholds) are payroll taxes calculated separately. State income tax varies widely; this version offers a federal-only mode and a choice for states with no wage income tax, and does not model other states.

Income Tax Calculator for the UK

UK Income Tax starts after the Personal Allowance, which reduces once income passes £100,000. Scotland uses its own bands; England, Wales and Northern Ireland share the same rates here. National Insurance is a separate contribution with its own thresholds and does not reduce your Income Tax. Pension contributions are handled by either a net pay arrangement or salary sacrifice, selected by you.

Income Tax Calculator for Australia

Australian residents pay no tax on the first $18,200 of taxable income when they claim the tax-free threshold. Higher income is taxed in bands, and the 2% Medicare levy is added in most cases. The lowest taxable band falls from 16% in 2025–26 to 15% in 2026–27, so choose the financial year carefully. Employer super is not deducted from your take-home pay.

Income Tax Calculator for Canada

Canada taxes income federally in five bands from 14% to 33%, reduced by the basic personal amount credit. Employees also pay CPP and EI. Each province adds its own tax, which this version does not include, so treat the result as a federal estimate.

Income Tax Calculator for Pakistan

Pakistan taxes salaried individuals in progressive slabs: nothing on the first Rs 600,000 a year, then rates rising from 1% to 35% above Rs 7 million. Enter your monthly salary and the tool annualises it for the Tax Year 2027 slabs. Check final rates with the FBR.

Difference Between Marginal and Effective Tax Rates

Your marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar; your effective rate is total tax divided by total income. In the US example above, the marginal rate is 22% but the effective rate is about 13.2%, because only $9,600 of the income is taxed at 22%.

Gross Salary vs Take-Home Pay

Gross salary is your pay before deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after the taxes and contributions included in this tool. Real paychecks may also include health premiums, union dues, loan repayments or benefits not modelled here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate income tax on my salary?

Subtract allowances and eligible deductions to find taxable income, then apply each bracket rate to the slice of income in that bracket and add the results.

How much tax will I pay on my salary?

Enter your salary above and choose your country; the calculator shows estimated tax, other deductions and take-home pay.

What is the difference between gross salary and take-home pay?

Gross is before tax and deductions; take-home is the amount left after the deductions included in the estimate.

How does a progressive tax system work?

Income is split into bands taxed at increasing rates, so higher earners pay higher rates only on the income above each threshold.

Is marginal tax rate the same as effective tax rate?

No. The marginal rate applies to your last dollar; the effective rate is your average rate across all income.

Does this calculator include National Insurance?

Yes, for the UK: employee Class 1 NI at 8% and 2% on earnings above the stated thresholds, calculated annually.

Does the US calculator include state income tax?

No state tax is calculated. You can choose federal-only, or a state with no wage income tax. Other states are not supported yet.

Does the Australian calculator include the Medicare levy?

Yes, a flat 2% by default, which you can untick if you are exempt. Low-income reductions and the Medicare levy surcharge are not modelled.

Which tax year should I select?

Use the year in which the income is earned: US 2026, UK 2026/27, and Australia 2026–27 for income from 1 July 2026.

Is this calculator an official tax assessment?

No. It is an estimate. Your actual liability depends on your full circumstances.
